The verb *speculate* is typically followed by the prepositions *about, on* or *upon.* In finance, one *speculates in* land, gold, commodities or stocks, but one *speculates on* the stock market.

- With a downturn in the American economy, many are speculating about how severely the Canadian dollar will be affected.
- The attorney refused to speculate upon (or on) the outcome of the trial.
- Petra enjoys speculating in real estate.
- My broker advised me to speculate on the stock market with only the money I could afford to lose.
